We have issues! This site runs on the 2nd oldest code base in the entire OpenCaching Network, and we're afraid it's finally caught up to us in late 2016. If you see php errors on the top of any page on this site, just scroll down, and most everything on the site still works. Our API is down, and smartphone apps, most notably c:geo, are not working. As far as the website itself, our "statistics" pages are most adversely affected. Please bear with us as we try to work out these issues, and hopefully update to the latest and greatest OpenCaching code. Watch this space for updates. Update 21 November: What a difference a day makes! Most everything is working properly, including our API and c:geo. Many thanks to Andrei from OpenCaching.ro for his assistance! Update 13 December: We still have the issue of page 2 and above of searches not working, and you cannot download a whole page of caches from a search, although you can download individual caches. Additionally, most, but not all, U.S. Zip Code searches are still not working.
Our new 5th anniversary Pathtags are very close to being sold out!. We used the Pathtags fundraiser program, where we paid no money up front, and the tags are for sale in packs of 20 for $20. Only 400 were originally made. We may or may not order more, but get the few remaining while they're hot. Still on the front page, but no longer the first item for sale at the The Geocoin Store's website. You can see the actual listing for the tag here on their website. Please consider buying a pack, and remember, people love to trade for Pathtags. Buy 20 of ours, and trade for 19 new ones for your collection.
We have completed the move to our new web hosting company, Kickassd.com!! The site is lightning fast, and they did an outstanding job, but a website transfer is no easy task. There are some minor issues, and we and they are aware of them. If you see any bugs anywhere on the website, feel free to send an email to octeam at opencaching.us. Watch this space for updates.
Update 07 March 2016: We believe all visible issues on the site have been fixed by Kickassd support (yes, they do). We still have issues with system generated emails going out. More specifically, ones run by Cron Jobs, for any of you Linux aficionados out there. Such as player to player emails, notifications for log entries on your caches, new cache notifications, notifications that we've accepted your new listing, etc..
Update 09 March 2016: We are quite certain all system generated emails are now going out! Still, should you find any little bugs on this website we might have missed, please report them to us.
Update 12 March 2016: We have had issues with the site throwing 503 errors, usually when hitting "submit", such as on a forum post, or a cache find log. Including one user who lost a new cache submission! However, we believe Kickassd support has now fixed this issue. We again believe we have no issues.
We have announced the winners in our 5th anniversary Pathtags contest! We gave away 10 (5, 3 and 2) to 3 lucky winners. See this post on our blog to see who won. We will duplicate this contest, and give away 10 more in the Spring, or early Summer. And remember you can always buy some of these Pathtags in lots of 20 for $20 from TheGeocoinstore.com.

Our new 5th anniversary Pathtags are finally on sale after several delays, most notably getting our free Pathtag back that anyone can use for their tags approved and listed on the Pathtags website. As with our first tag, we used the Pathtags fundraiser program, where we paid no money up front, and the tags are for sale in packs of 20 for $20. Currently listed as the most recent item for sale on the main page of The Geocoin Store's website. You can see the actual listing for the tag here on their website. Please consider buying a pack, and remember, people love to trade for Pathtags.
We have added 12 more of our site owned locationless type challenge caches, for a total of 42. If you're not familiar with them, they are presented as Geo-art in the Gulf of Mexico, and if you qualify, you can log them; no need for a boat. To see them, click on the "Challenge Caches" link in the main menu on the left hand side of our site, or go to the Map of Caches (also in the main menu), scroll to the Gulf of Mexico, and look at the "A" in the OCNA Geo-art. You can also see a summary of this batch of caches at a post on our blog. We do have plans for more Challenge Caches!
TermiteHunter has joined the OC Team as a Site Admin. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, he started Geocaching in 2007 on Geocaching.com, where he has over 1,000 finds and over 70 hides. He joined OpenCaching North America in August, 2010, a few days after our official launch, and has hidden 111 caches on our site, the 2nd most of any player. He is also a Lackey (Admin) for the Greater Charlotte Geocaching Club. Manville Possum Hunters, from Gate City, Virginia, has joined the OC Team as a cache reviewer. He joined Geocaching.com, where he has hidden well over 100 caches, in 2008. He has hidden almost 80 caches on our site. He brings with him the experience of having reviewed hundreds of Geocache placements the last 5 years as the most prolific peer reviewer at the now shut down Garmin Opencaching.com site. We are very happy to have them both on board!
We drew the winning numbers for the 28 prizes for our 5th anniversary contest on Tuesday, September 15th, and the results are available here on our blog. Congratulations to all our winners!
We are experiencing sporadic, but frequent site performance issues, which we are currently trying to pinpoint. Slow site? Try again later; the steps we've taken to fix this problem make the site super fast when this is not happening. We plan on releasing the final scores for our 5th Anniversary contest, and the number of entries each player earned (as well as the random numbers assigned to their entries generated by the website random.org), this weekend. Check our blog for that, at a time when the site is running fast. :-) We will push the drawing for prizes back 2 days until Tuesday, September 15th, at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

One week to the day after the most popular Geocaching website in the world imposed a one year moratoriam on new challenge caches, we at OpenCaching North America introduced our own! They are Locationless, so to speak. If you qualify, you can log it. They are owned by a special Admin account, OCNAChallenges, and are all Unknown (?) type caches. They are presented as Geo Art in the Gulf of Mexico. We plan on having 40+, but we just released the first 12 on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015.
To see them, refer to the bottom of this post on our blog. You could also look at the profile of username OCNAChallenges. If you have an account with us, and are logged in, you can go to our Map of Caches, and scroll down to the Gulf of Mexico, you can’t miss them. However, you cannot see this map if you are not a registered user. Go ahead and log if you qualify, and stay tuned for many more to come!!
Update, 6 May 2015: We have released 8 more, for a current total of 20. See this post on our blog for a list and description of them.
We introduced our mascot, Hank The Hawk, via a blog post on January 2nd, 2015. You can see he's since been implemented into the "frame" around every page on our site in two places. We also have Hank The Hawk T-Shirt designs available in the OCNA Swag Store, powered by Spreadshirt.com! They are very reasonably priced, check it out!
It's been a couple of years since there was a free ios app for the OpenCaching Network, so we are pleased to announce that the GeoCaches app by Russian developer Yuriy Lukyanets, offers support for OCNA, as well as our sister nodes opencaching.pl, .de, .nl and .org.uk with it's latest version, 1.4.5. Check it out, and let us know what you think! And don't forget, what many consider to be the best Geocaching app (free or not) on any platform, c:geo for Android, has been compatible with ourselves and our sister sites since April, 2014. We at the OpenCaching Network pride ourselves in being forever free, so we are very excited that there are free apps for the two major smartphone platforms once again, as well as two free apps for Windowsphone.
