Description   EN

This virtual cache will bring you to Gathland State Park, where there are ample opportunities to hike and enjoy the area. To the north, you can hike to Crampton Gap, and on up to US Route 40 and Turners Gap. To the south, you can hike to Weverton Heights and on to Harpers Ferry, WV.

The Battle of South Mountain — known in several early Southern accounts as the Battle of Boonsboro Gap — was fought September 14, 1862, as part of the Maryland Campaign of the American Civil War. Three pitched battles were fought for possession of three South Mountain passes: Crampton's, Turner's, and Fox's Gaps. Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, commanding the Union Army of the Potomac, needed to pass through these gaps in his pursuit of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Despite being significantly outnumbered, Lee's army delayed McClellan's advance for a day before withdrawing.

There will also be a terracaching virtual nearby, but they are two separate caches. You will need a confirmation code for this cache. At the coordinates, you will see a sign reading about the Battle of South Mountain. In the first paragraph on the upper left hand of the sign, you will need the four digit year.

I went out on an alternate caching run today. Gathered 6 terracaches, a couple locationless ones if I can find them and one OCUS cache.

This was a very impressive structure. TFTC

3356.  FTF!  Been here before and had even thought of placing a new virtual here, so was glad when I originally saw these 3 show up.  Didn't have a chance to make it out, at first and more recently wanted to wait for July, so I could used this (these) toward NativTxn's "Hiders & Seekers Unlimited" contest.

Of course, I completed the 2 TerraCaches, while I was here.

Thanks and Happy Trails!
