The Courthouse, located at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Main Street in Xenia, Ohio, had its cornerstone laid March 15, 1901. Designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the architects were Samuel Hannaford and Sons, who completed the building in 1902 at a cost of $191,746. This Courthouse was the third built to serve Greene County, the first built in 1809 at a cost of $3,396. The second in 1843. The material used to construct the Courthouse is Buff sandstone from Bedford, Indiana, built on a red sandstone base from Marquette, Michigan. Guarding the Detroit Avenue entrance are two stone griffins, familiar figures in the heraldry of feudal times. These lions were made by George McDonnell of Chicago. The exterior has round arched openings and corbelled cornice. A primary feature of the courthouse is the asymmetrical square clock tower above the southwest corner guarded by eight gargoyles, located on each side of the tower, just below the clock face. The clock tower is 145 feet high. The clock is from Manitee, Michigan, and weighs 4500 pounds inside a frame weighing 3000 pounds. The clock rings on each hour indicating the time. A custodian would wind the clock each day until December 1941 when the clock was electrified. The original glass face of the clock is now plastic. The roof is red tile. Inside the Courthouse, part of the walls and staircase are made of imported white Italian marble. The Mosaic floors are made of glass tiles. The second floor has several murals, with the one at the top of the stairs by an artist from Cincinnati, Ohio. The mural on the ceiling of the courtroom one is by John Archer of Schachne Studios, Dayton, Ohio. The stained glass window above the entrance to courtroom one was created by the Art Glass Company of Springfield, Ohio. In courtroom one, on the north side, is a beautiful colored leaded stain glass window titled "Justice is Blind" created by Erkins Glass Company of Springfield, Ohio. This window dates from the completion of the building at a cost of$400. The window depicts a blindfolded woman holding the scales of justice. It notes the years 1803 when Greene County was established, 1809, 1843 and 1902 when each Courthouse was erected. The following messages are also incorporated into its design: "The law delights in equity, it covets perfection, it is a rule of Right," and "The safety of the people is the supreme law." Before the stain glass window was completed in April 1902 it was damaged by high winds and needed repairs for completion at a cost of $200. Again on April 4, 1974, high winds struck Xenia in the form of a tornado. The path of the storm was directly beside the Courthouse. Much of the tile roof was damaged as well as the four glass faces of the clock. Several of the gargoyles were blown away but were recovered and replaced. The stained leaded window in courtroom one was not broken, but the changing air pressure of the tornado bowed the window requiring later refurbishing. A storm window protecting the glass likely saved it from further damage. The courtrooms have been refurbished and redesigned since 1902 as well as other offices in the Courthouse which originally held all Greene County offices. Due to security reasons, only the north side, Market Street entrance, is available for entry into the Greene County Courthouse.
