With all the discussion / controversy over the Confederate monuments in Baltimore, let me to to look more into Baltimore's various monuments and I found the website, Monument City Blog (MCB).  Per their site, "Monument City is a human-scale geotagging project. We’re riding our bikes around Baltimore City to document historical monuments, memorials and markers with GPS, photos and other first-person data."

I started with some the Confederate memorials that the city is now looking into possibly removing, but this monument is dedicated to the soldiers of the Spanish-American War.

The Hiker of Baltimore

Per the MCB, ...this monument reads upon the front face of the pedestal, “Gloria Victis,” or “Glory to the Vanquished.” Though this sculpture is by Frederic Wellington Ruckstull and was dedicated in February of 1903, Gloria Victis is also the title of a 1874 sculpture at the National Gallery in Washington, DC by artist Antonin Mercie commemorating France’s loss in the Franco-Prussian War.
"The monument stands between Mt Royal Avenue proper, and Mt Royal Terrace, a parallel access street for residents of the Bolton Hill neighborhood. Nearby stand several buildings of the Maryland Institute, College of Art. The sculpture is composed of two figures: the allegorical figure of Glory with wings outstretched, who holds aloft a laurel wreath in one hand, and in the other supports a soldier whose strength is failing him. His flag is lowered and he seems near defeat.

Per the MCB...Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson is a Massachusetts born sculptor known for her dignified realist style. The student and spouse of artist Henry Hudson Kitson, Theo studied in Paris and was recognized for her work by the age of nineteen. Her most famous work is The Hiker, a monument to soldiers who fought in the Spanish-American War. The conflict occurred at the end of the 19th century, and was waged in Cuba, the Philippines and Guam. Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders were crucial in the Cuban campaign, fighting in the important Battle of San Juan Hill. The engagements ended in four months with the United States winning easily. The side-by-side fighting of Northerners and Southerners helped heal the wounds opened during the American Civil War. Mrs. Kitson was commissioned to create over fifty Hiker statues during her lifetime, memorializing the common soldier throughout the country. She passed away in 1932.

Unveiled in June of 1943, the monument stands in the median between eastbound and westbound Fayette Street. A cannon rests just outside the small fence surrounding the statue. The hiker is carrying a musket in both hands, a bag over his right shoulder and canteen over his other. It appears the dedication plaques are missing from the base of the structure.

Logging Requirements:

1. Visit the site in person.

2. Post a photo of your and / or your GPS with the monument.

3. In front of The Hiker, is a small canon.  Look at the front of the canon and you'll see lots of text inscribed.  The canon was captured by the USS _____.

I also created a few new Sighter location for The Hiker.  I hope you'll grab it, too, while you're here.
