Description EN

There was a short lived cache listed at the site, back in the spring.  I revisited the area and have decided to list a virtual, here.

At GZ, you will find a sculpture of Major General Samuel Smith (1752-1839).  During his life, he served as US Senator and Representative from Maryland and mayor of Baltimore.  Additionally, he served as an officer of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and, later, was a general in the Maryland militia.  During the War of 1812, he was in command of Baltimore defenses.  Much of the credit for defeat of the British during the Battle of Baltimore and Fort McHenry can be attributed to his preparations.

After serving in Congress and the Senate, he was elected Mayor of Baltimore in 1835.  He died in 1839 and is interred downtown in the Old Westminster Burying Ground, along with Edgar Allan Poe.

There are various parking options for Federal Hill.  You can, of course, park at the Inner Harbor and walk over.  You may be able to get "metered" parking in the immediate area.  Best of all, you can sometimes find free parking to the south, along Warren Avenue.  This is where you will need to park for wheelchair access, as it is the only side of the hill, where you will not need to climb a flight of steps to access the cache site.

Log Requirements:

1. Log Password will be the 1st word on the 6th line on the right hand side of the stature (the general's right).

2. Post a picuture of youself and / or your GPS with the statue, being sure NOT to include the Log Password info in your photograph.

3. You must visit the site in person to claim this virtual cache.
