Description EN

Benchmarking has been a hobby of mine for a while now and I thought that I'd like to bring a little bit of that to the Opencaching community.

What we have here is a classic example of what is referred to as an "intersection station."  What that means is simply that the benchmark intersects a line of sight and is used as a reference point for another location.  Pretty much if you can see it, you've found it!  The catch is that you have to make sure that the description of what you are looking at matches the description of the benchmark.

For example, many older water towers get torn down and replaced with newer, more streamline ones.  That means that the benchmark no longer exists, the new tower may not be the same height or built in the exact same spot.  For buildings, it is absolutely critical to also check the date of construction.  This is usually found on a block near the front entrance.

The mark you are looking for today is PN0957.  Here is the description according to the NGS Data Sheet:

"DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1954 (DAJ)

THE STATION IS LOCATED JUST NORTHEAST OF THE JAY AND MARION STREETS INTERSECTION IN OSHKOSH. IT IS ABOUT 120 FEET HIGH, HAS 12 LEGS, IS PAINTED SILVER, OF STEEL CONSTRUCTION AND HAS A BALL ON TOP. THE POINT INTERSECTED WAS THE BALL ON TOP"

And here are the subsequent reports after the initial recording of the mark:

"STATION RECOVERY (1964)

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1964 (JMC)

RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED IN GOOD CONDITION. PN0957 PN0957"

"STATION RECOVERY (1968)

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1968 (JMW)

THE STATION WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT THE STREET CHANGES IN THE AREA WARRANT A NEW DESCRIPTION. THE STATION IS LOCATED DOWNTOWN OSHKOSH, ABOUT 0.15 MILE NORTHWEST ON MARION RD. FROM THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. 45 AND MARION RD. AND ABOUT 100 YARDS NORTHEAST OF MARION RD. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--DOWNTOWN OSHKOSH."

"STATION RECOVERY (1974)

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1974 (ARB)

STATION RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--DOWNTOWN OSHKOSH."

"STATION RECOVERY (1980)

RECOVERY NOTE BY LOCAL ENGINEER (INDIVIDUAL OR FIRM) 1980 (E)

DESCRIPTION ADEQUATE. TANK IN GOOD SHAPE. STATION RECOVERY (1996) RECOVERY NOTE BY US POWER SQUADRON 1996

RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION."

"STATION RECOVERY (2006)

RECOVERY NOTE BY GEOCACHING 2006 (RFC)

"STATION RECOVERY (2009)
