The McMahan Indian Mound is located in Sevierville, Tennessee along the bank of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River on highway 441 (Forks of the River Parkway) next to the Landmark INN and across the street from the Burger King. Between 1200 and 1500 AD Native American Indians were believed to have lived near the area of the McMahan Indian Mound. During excavation of the area in 1881, several artifacts were discovered including burials. Many of the artifacts were sent to the Smithsonian. The land was owned by the McMahan family at the time of the excavation & thus the mound was named the McMahan Indian Mound. The mound measures 16 feet high and 240 feet in circuference. Today the mound has a historic marker at the edge of the parkway. There is also a beautiful flower lined path that leads to a raised marker that indicates that the mound was conveyed to the city of Sevierville by the Temple family on December 28, 1987 & that the site should not be disturbed due to its archeological & historic signifance. It will only take a few moments to stop and view this historic site. It is a nice way to pay tribute to the Native Americans that once lived on this land and roamed this valley. To log this listing as a find, visit the site and locate a marker at the beginning of the sidewalk that leads to the plaque that tells about the mound being conveyed to the City of Sevierville by the Temple family.
