Beschrijving EN

Wittenberg, Missouri was founded in 1839 by Lutheran Saxon settlers who settled so much of the surrounding area following Martin Stephan from Saxony. In 1839, however, Wittenberg was called Stephan's Landing as it was the parcel of land purchased specifically as a landing in the area to provide access to the land the Lutherans had bought while living, temporarily, in St. Louis.

The name was changed later to Wittenberg following the ouster of Stephan as the head of the Lutheran Saxon group in the wake of charges of sexual misconduct by a number of the female members of the congregation. He was rowed from Stephan's landing to the far shore of the Mississippi and put off in Illinois with nothing but an ax, a spade and a few personal belongings.

The Community of Saxon Lutherans flourished in the area led by their new sheppard, Walther and founded many towns throughout Perry County.

This virtual cache is located at an historical marker placed by the Saxon Lutheran Heritage Society and commemmorates the site of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wittenberg, Missouri. The church, like the town, no longer exists. Floods and poverty took a devestating toll on this community which the great muddy river slowly disolved over the course of about a century.

To claim this cache, please provide the passcode and, if possibly, a picture of yourself at the marker.

The pass code is the answer to the following question: In whatyear was St. Paul's Congregation organized as an independent congregation?
