Description EN

At 10:17 PM EST on February 12, 2009 Colgan Air Flight 3407, a Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 Turboprop, on a scheduled flight from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo, New York, went into aerodynamic stall, and crashed in the Hamlet of Clarence Center, New York, 5 miles short of Runway 23 at Buffalo International Airport.

All 49 passengers and crew of the plane were killed, as well as one person on the ground, Douglas Wielinski, after the plane squarely hit his house at 6038 Long Street. His Wife and Daughter escaped the house with only minor injuries. Their house, and a house next door were deemed a total loss, and razed.

A small Memorial Park, which was dedicated June 2, 2012, now sits at the site of the tragedy. A walkway, in the shape of an airplane wing, contains 51 stepping stones, one for each victim (this includes the unborn baby of one of the passengers). Near center in the picture above is a small Memorial stone to the Wielinski home at 6038 Long Street. Far center is a stone and wood bench, and a large Memorial stone with the names of all the victims of the crash. There is no parking lot, you will have to park along Long Street, or on nearby Clarence Center Road. The Memorial is only a few hundred feet down Long Street.

Logging Requirments:

First of all, please be very discrete, and repectful of the neighbor's privacy while visiting this Memorial. It's location is not "advertised"  by any signage anywhere in Clarence Center, nor on Long Street itself. Cache owner will accept photo evidence of a visit; The Park, or any one of the four landmarks (Walkway, Wielinski Stone, Memorial Stone to the victims, or the Bench). Get your GPSr in the picture if possible, but this is not mandatory. Posing for pictures at this Memorial almost seems inappropriate, but that could be just me.

Enjoy your visit to this solemn Memorial. The beautiful "Summer" picture on this page is from the personal Blog of Budd Bailey of the Buffalo News, and used with his permission. I personally visited on a snowy, icy November day.
