Description EN

She used to be a white ash tree, more than 100 years old, a grande dame that shaded the graceful, Mediterranean-style house on Lee Highway near the Falls Church line. It took sick, as old trees do, and her grieving owners couldn't bring themselves to chop it down.

They hired a sculptur who started at the base and carefully chipped out each scale of the mermaid's tail. A fish and a seahorse emerged. Moving up, he created a graceful rear end, then gave the lady long, manlike arms that reach skyward, releasing a dove.

The final result was an 18-foot tall-mermaid with very large, um, mermaid parts.

Some folks complained, and the County code enforcement officers got involved. "We deemed it art and closed the case."

You cannot park directly in front of the house, but you can park on a side street right down the road at

N38 53.592, W077 09.018

and then walk up the public sidewalk to see the house.
