Hier Ruht In Gott, begin many of the stones in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetary. Many of these stones stretch back into the roots of the small community of Wittenberg. Originally called Stephan's Landing, this land was purchased as a landing point to access the lands Stephan's Saxon Lutheran community had purchased while intemporary residence in St. Louis after Imigrating to the US.
The name of the town was changed after Stephan was excommunicated for embezzelment and sexual misconduct, and taken across the river, where he made his way to Kaskaskia and served as the leader of the Trinity Lutheran Church there.
You will probably want to skip this cach if the Mississippi is in flood stage or even close to it, Wittenberg no longer exists because of Mississippi floods.
