The Freedom Rock

At lot of people have heard of the famous "freedom rock" but never stopped to see it.  It's just a few miles off the interstate, and well worth visiting.  And is quite a sight to see kind of in the middle of no-where.

My wife and I stopped a couple of year's ago and found out a lot of the history about the rock.  The artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II was there working on it when we stopped.  He re-paint's the rock every year around memorial day.  He told us how he got tired of seeing the rock with graffiti and got the idea to paint it with a neat patriotic scene.  You can find more info on http://www.thefreedomrock.com/Bubba. Here on his website

But he was painting away on a hot day and the rock has no shade near it, and he was just working away on the rock. He told us, a lot of the local's will stop while he's working on it, to chat and a lot of vet's will stop and share their story's with them.  He's been painting this since 1999 now.

One of the "local legend's" is some teen's did vandalize the rock after he painted it one year, and a small motorcycle group found out who did it, and basically beat the tar off of them.  But since then nobody has tampered with the rock.

To gain credit for this cache you will have to take a photo of yourself next to the rock and post it in your log.  I do encourage you to take more than one picture.  Take a few and post them and try to grab all the sides of the rock to show all the different scene's.  They do change every year.

And yes Bubba was a little photo shy when we where there.  But it was neat to hear first hand how this tradition came to be.
