When the first Europeans traveled across the Atlantic ocean to America, they navigated their course by looking up into the sky at the stars.  Using star charts, sextons, and geometry, the ships navigators could plot the course of the ship as it sailed across the ocean blue.

In 1994, navigators began to look up to the sky for something else: satellites.  The US Air Force launched 24 GPS satellites up into the sky which would continuously orbit the earth, each emitting its unique radio signal.  GPS devices on earth triangulate signals from at least 4 satellites in order to determine the location of that device.  A GPS device can provide information on latitude, longitude, altitude and time; it is accurate within about 10 meters.   Originally the GPS was used only by the US military but in 2001 the US Government opened up the GPS system to allow use by everyone.  Today GPS devices are found inside of cars, used in geocaching, help provide accurate time information, and assist with disaster relief.   For more information on GPS, see GPS.gov.
