The airfield is located in the Lewis & Clark National Forest near one of the access points to the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The runway is over a mile long and over a mile high. The airfield was constructed in 1966 to provide airplane access for anyone who wants to enjoy the numerous activities available in this area from hunting to hiking. It also provides a means for quick access to the area by the National Forest for administration purposes. It is a beautiful area to visit, explore and recreate. The road ends just a short ways from the airfield and at that point all must walk or ride your four legged friend of choice. It’s up to you to research all the rules and regulations if you decide to extend your trip into the wilderness.

 

The Bob Marshall Wilderness is one of the most completely preserved mountain ecosystems in the world, the kind of wilderness most people can only imagine: rugged peaks, alpine lakes, cascading waterfalls, grassy meadows embellished with shimmering streams, a towering coniferous forest, and big river valleys.

Remember, this is bear country and that includes Grizzlies!

To get here, you can either fly in from anywhere USA or drive in. From Augusta, it’s about 30 miles one way on a well maintained gravel road. You will pass Nilan Reservoir and Wood Lake on the way and both are must stop spots if you like to fish or have a desire to picnic. Wood Lake also has campgrounds if you are looking for a great spot to camp overnight or for a few days. Be sure to stop for any other caches along the way.

To receive credit for this cache you need to:
1. Visit the cache site on or after the date this virtual cache was established.
2. Take a picture of yourself and your GPSR standing in front of the Benchmark Airfield sign located at the published coordinates. Upload the picture with your log. Logs without the required picture will be deleted.
3. If you flew in, also upload a picture of your aircraft.
4. Answer this question: What surrounds the airfield and why? Do not post the answer to the question in your log. E mail me the answer.

This is one of my favorite areas in Montana. Please be responsible and work hard to leave it like or better than you found it. In other words, LEAVE NO TRACE!

As with most virtual caches, it is not always the destination that is important, it’s also the journey. Have a safe and memorable journey.
