The "giant on the hill" outside Dayton Washington is a massive hillside outline of the Jolly Green Giant, the iconic mascot of the Green Giant food brand.
This approximately 300-foot-tall figure is created using white patio blocks and paving stones to form the silhouette of the smiling giant in his leafy tunic, with hands on hips. Local volunteers and Green Giant employees constructed it in 1993 (an earlier version from the 1970s used seeded grass that appeared seasonally).
It honors Dayton's history as a major asparagus canning center for the brand until the plant closed and moved to Peru in 2005. The landmark is visible from US Highway 12 about a mile west of town, with a roadside pull-off for viewing and photo opportunities (including a smaller statue and info panels).
It's often called one of the largest pieces of folk art in the U.S.
