Tonawanda Creek drains a 650 square mile basin along its 90 mile length. It traces a meandering path from Wyoming county eventually discharging into the Niagara River. This section of the creek is the only natural waterway that was used as a part of the Erie Canal which joined the creek south of Lockport. Completed in 1825 the Erie canal carried the bulk of the commerce for the great lakes an points west well into the twentieth century. It was because of the Erie canal that NY City became the major port for the growing United States. Beginning in 1834 the canal was widened to accommodate the ever increasing traffic resulting from the demands of a growing nation. But it wasn't enough. In 1918 the larger New York State Barge Canal was opened and the smaller Erie canal became obsolete.
The cache is accessible either by paddling to it from across the creek or hiking or biking the paved trail. We biked from the parking lot at Ellicott Island Park.
