Douglas LeTell Rights

If you are interested in North Carolina rivers and small boat paddling, or North Carolina history, you may have come across the writings of Douglas LeTell Rights (September 11, 1891 to December 1, 1956, aged 65). Rights was born on a day that would become infamous 110 years after his birth. Note: As of this writing, the birth date shown in the summary at FindaGrave, September 21, is incorrect, according to the date on Rights' burial marker.

This is about a quarter to a third of a mile walk from the first official July 4 Celebration Plaque OU089E, depending on route.

A biography of Rights is online here:

Some of Right's writings are available for download here:

It was the book, A Voyage Down the Yadkin-Great Peedee River, by Rights, that first caught my attention. It, or rather the companion, Yadkin Passage by Floyd Rogers, was featured for a book discussion with The Yadkin Riverkeeper, whose office is also located in Winston-Salem.

I became aware Rights was buried in God's Acre (Gottesacker in old German), or Old Salem Cemetery, and even found locating information: Square: 02R, Row: 02, Grave: 07, but was unable to find a map showing how the cemetery was organized into Squares and Rows. It was clear the cemetery separates burials of Males, Females, and children, so that helps eliminate many sections. Longer story shorter, I searched from one end of the cemetery to the other before finding Rights' marker. It's a pleasant, peaceful place to walk, and water spigots are available in case you forget your water bottle as I did. Few people were around on a Fall, Thursday afternoon. A couple was searching for the oldest grave at the cemetery (John Birkhead, June 7, 1771, age 32), but they also had no clue how to find it. After finding Rights' marker, I now know how the squares are organized, and how to find Birkhead's marker (Square 02J, Row 01, Grave 01).

The logging code is the last name on the marker to the left of Rights' marker (when reading it).

Please upload photos of anything in the area you find interesting, except spoilers. I saw many interesting things on my walk around Old Salem.
