Hellsgate Osprey Nest Cam Webcam Cache
This OpenCaching North America Webcam Cache is focused on an Osprey Nesting Platform near the Riverside Health Care facility in Missoula, Montana. The webcam is streamed live through the All About Birds Hellsgate Osprey Nestcam page. You can stand on the sidewalk to get yourself into the image - no need to enter the parking lot of the Riverside facility
EDIT (November 2017): A new parking lot has been constructed to the east of the Riverside facility. You might need to find a spot in or near that parking lot in order to be in the webcam view - it all depends on how the camera is positioned.
According to Cornell University's All About Bird Identification Guide: "Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons." We've watched this birdcam feed quite a bit over the last few years, and it was a very cool find to actually visit the site on out road trio to western Canada via the USA. We encourage your to check out the other birdcams available through the All About Birds Birdcam page
Logging Requirements
To log this cache, you must obtain a webcam screenshot of you at the posted coordinates. any Found It logs without an accompanying webcam screenshot will be deleted.
While the webcam is focused on the osprey nesting platform most of the time, the webcam can and is occasionally remotely repositioned to view the surrounding area. This is part of the challenge in getting the webcam shot. In my experience of streaming this webcam feed for a few hours (what can I say, I like osprey), the camera is focused on the nest >99% of the time.
Osprey are protected under Federal law, and it is a crime to disturb and interfere with the nesting birds. Standing at the posted coordinates and capturing a webcam image will not interfere with the birds.
