Cannon Mills, a textile facility, was the backbone of this area for many years. As the textile industry shipped its work overseas, this once booming area began to feel the decline. In 2005, demolition began on an area the size of the Pentagon. By the end of 2006, all that was recognized as Cannon Mills was gone. Every building, the water tower, the smoke stacks and the Town Pond, all gone.
Then began the development of what would become the North Carolina Research Campus. Where you find yourself standing is in view of most, but not all, of the new buildings (not including the Plant building which on the other side of the road behind the Main Building to your right).
