Originally proposed by Bell Laboratories in 1945 the Nike Project was a missle based air defense system. It was conceived and developed to defend against jet aircraft because it was becoming clear that gun based systems could not handle the threat of the faster, higher flying jet aircraft being developed. Over the approximately three decades that the system was active it was improved and broadened to include missile and even satellite defense.
