Beschrijving EN
Once buried beneath the waters of South Texas' Falcon Lake, Mexico's colonial jewel, Guerrero Viejo, now a ghost town, glistens again in the warm Chihauhuan sun. But now only the skeletal remains of the once great city can be seen.

Once a great frontier city created by Royal decree, Guerrero, like Atlantis, sunk to the bottom of a watery grave and was no more. Gone were many fine examples of Spanish architecture and Old World craftsmanship. Gone was its Euro-like glory; the art, the people, and most of the glorious memories.

Old Guerrero, as it has been called since the residents of the town were forced-relocated to a newly constructed city some 13 miles to the south, has reappeared on the Texas-Mexico border since a decade of drought and water shortages have caused the waters of Lake Falcon to recede.

The skeletal framework of this frontier ghost town is now an attraction for visitors who come in search of history, ghosts and a taste of what life past must have been like in this remote outpost on the Mexican frontier.

Guerrero Viejo

Getting There
To visit Guerrero Viejo (Old Guerrero), cross the border at the Falcon Dam on your way to Nuevo Guerrero. Take Highway 2 North along the border travelling West of the reservoir. Watch for hand-painted signs pointing to a dirt road which passes through several small ranchitos, and the ruins of old stone structures, gradually descending to Old Guerrero behind a gated entrance. The road is about 10 miles long, but will require significant time as you may have to open and close gates, wait for livestock to move off of the road, etc.

At the site, there may be a gate attendant. If so, you must pay to enter, usually just a few dollars. The admission charge is helping to fund the restoration of the church.

The Federales frequent the little village, once a ghost town, as there is renewed interest and increased visitation from the outside world. You will also likely find Federales check points on Highway 2, so you will need your valid auto insurance, identification and a passport. Be aware that water levels fluctuate and some areas may be inaccessible at times.

This cache has received the dangerous attribute because of the recent unrest in Mexico. Seek this cache at your own risk.  To log this cache, post a picture of your GPS with any of the old ruins in the background (preferably the church).
