This one is from "Kansas City", a rhythm and blues song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1952. The best known version of "Kansas City" was recorded in 1959 by Wilbert Harrison.
There is parking immediately adjacent the the monument on 12th Street.
Partial lyrics:
I'm goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City, here I come
Yes, goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City, here I come
They got a crazy way a-lovin' an' a I wanna get me some
I was standing on the corner, of 12th Street and Vine
Yeah, standing on the corner, of 12th Street and Vine
With my Kansas City woman an a bottle of Kansas City wine
Well I might take a plane, I might take a train
If I have to walk, I'm going there just the same
I'm going to, Kansas City, Kansas City, here I come
They got a crazy way a-lovin' an I wanna get me some
Oh yeah
The actual corner of 12th Street and Vine hasn't existed for some time, thanks to the rerouting of some of the roads in the area. However, in 2005, Kansas City adopted "Kansas City" as its official song, dedicating "Goin' To Kansas City Plaza" in the historic 18th and Vine Jazz district and posting a new street sign for the famous corner.
