Beschrijving EN

This one is from "City of New Orleans", a folk song written by Steve Goodman, describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans via the Illinois Central Railroad in a nostalgic manner. Goodman performed the song for Arlo Guthrie in the Quiet Knight, a bar in Chicago, and Guthrie agreed to add it to his repertoire. The song was a hit for Guthrie on his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby, and is now more closely associated with him, although Goodman performed it until his death in 1984. The song has also been covered by Willie Nelson, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson and others.

If you have a favorite version of the song, please include that in your log.

There should be ample parking available at the station.

To claim this cache, please post a photo of yourself and your GPS unit at the Kankakee Station with an identifiable feature clearly visible. If you're shy, you can take the photo from behind you or simply show us your hand holding your GPS.

The Kankakee Station was built in 1898 as an Illinois Central Railroad Depot, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since the year 2000. The northern end of the station is also the home of the Kankakee Railroad Museum. The station is still a flag stop for the City of New Orleans Line, now operated by Amtrak.

City of New Orleans
Partial lyrics:

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
